I’m not under the impression that I’ve shared this video before. If I’m wrong about that, consider this an “encore presentation!”

“Monster Movie” is a short by Kevin Obsatz from a few years back, visually constructed from behind the scenes footage of a sequence in Dan Schneidkraut’s excellent documentary feature Vore King. I’ll send curious readers here for more info about “Vore King”; in the meantime suffice to say it’s NSFW, and fascinating.

The BTS footage that constitutes “Monster Movie” documents the filming of a ritual that appears in “Vore King” (toward the end, if memory serves). We see the blocking, reshearsal, and tech prep for the shoot, focusing in on minute details here and there.

I received a full complement of production audio from the shoot, synced to nothing, and was told to do whatever I liked with it. I culled through it all to find the material that interested me.

I decided to construct the soundscape entirely from the production audio. When it came to the voice of Patrick Whalen, the documentary’s subject (who doesn’t seem to have much of an Internet presence that I can detect, so I’m not finding anything to link to really), my impression was that his energy embodied that of several other people all at the same time. So I decided to layer his dialog recordings atop each other two and three at a time to convey the multiplicity of his energy.

I’m also happy that Whalen mentions the film “Razorback” here. I still haven’t seen it, but it’s on my list.
