make your mark: music for animation

“Make Your Mark” is a short animation by Shelby Pearson. I created an original score for the piece, which you can hear on my new release “Soundtracks Vol. 1”. The short was originally commissioned as part of a film event produced by Kevin Obsatz.

In this score I “Mickey Moused”, or scored in sync with visual movements, throughout this animation— including some bright flourishes at the moment where the young protagonist has been gifted a sketchbook, and the expository melodic phrases that follow her through her discovery of drawing as an expressive outlet and even social tool. When the character becomes disillusioned with her craft, the music becomes a bit discordant to match. Eventually we achieve resolution at the end of the piece.

I somehow got a bit of a French vibe from the visuals, so I added some accordion to the basic  trad-jazz palette of piano, standup bass, and drums. Enjoy!
