Selected from over a decade of original musical scores for media in the film, animation, and podcast spheres, this collection from composer and sound designer Mike Hallenbeck spans a dizzying array of styles and strategies befitting their diverse origins. The compositions traverse boppy pop and kitschy jazz, friendly folk and orchestral majesty, outre abstract soundscapes and musique concrete. Catchy melodies and harmonies emerge in unexpected packages and dissolve unpredictably. Crystalline tones dance with grainy textures. Tuneful arrangements swim in surreal spaces. Vocals sometimes emerge as hums, burbles, whistles, and scats. Disembodied from the visuals they originally accompanied, Hallenbeck’s compositions guide the listener far off the beaten path on a sojourn through the sonic hinterlands.
