SCORE + SOUND FOR FILM: “FIGHTING SLEEP”
Recently completed: musical score, sound design, and mix for “Fighting Sleep”, a multi-channel Super 8 film by Kevin Obsatz. The log line– “grappling with parenting in the dark”-- kinda says it all.
My far less compact description… Obsatz recorded his voiceover (concerning his sleep deprivation while raising a baby) through a baby monitor, also providing a raw melody on a kid’s celeste (or some such toy instrument) and some production sound of his son and a martial arts studio where Obsatz eventually worked out his frustrations. I underscored the VO and location audio with instrumentation ranging from acoustic guitar and live drumming to some more kid bells, manipulating much of the results with pitch shifting and granular synthesis, layering various lines to ease from a clouded mindset to a full-on mental maelstrom. Finally things taper off in a relatively tranquil ending, as some relatively mellifluous layers trail off under the sounds of Obsatz’s son playing.
So far “Fighting Sleep” has screened at the Antimatter media festival in Victoria, British Columbia, and will soon show at central Wisconsin’s Weyauwega festival in mid-November. More festival showings should follow. Stay tuned!
