The packed house at the Minnanimate 11 animation festival was a blast last night. Originally conceived by John Akre, currently curated and hosted by CC Stanhill, and soon to be turned over to Merit Thursday, the program featured work by all three of these artists and plenty more promising animators besides– below I’m including a still from a piece by Ed Heyl that I really enjoyed.

It was an honor to hear my sound design and music as part of Thursday's "Second Born Son: A Transsexual Documentary" (the image at the top of this entry is a still), I saw lots of other films I'd really like to see again, and as the final piece in the program, Sishir Bommakanti's "Diner at the End of the World" (still below) blew all our minds in ways I won't even try to describe. (OK, I’ve thought of one way to describe it, which is to say that rather than perching on the edge of the uncanny valley, this work dives right in and makes itself at home. How’s that?)

Getting to hear about all the artists' process during the post-show Q&A (image below) was a treat— a running theme appears to be that the festival's existence itself encouraged a lot of the animators to create work. That's the generative value of curation right there. I say hooray for Minnanimate, and may it reanimate for years to come!
