The other night I was honored to give a talk at a film composer meetup related to Film Score Fest, an event that pairs up composers and filmmakers to collaborate on original work for an eventual screening with a live orchestra (and potentially other musicians: read on).

I gave a presentation about my score for animator John Akre’s “Let’s Count To Six, Shall We?”, a new experimental short currently out on the festival circuit.

I broke down my process for creating one of three strands woven into the score: an electric guitar performance (originally performed by me for another project) microedited into tiny randomized slices that I programmed into overlapping, jittery loopscapes.

Pictured above is composer Josie Just, who preceded my talk by demonstrating the capacities of the accordion (one of my favorite instruments, I don’t care what anybody says), which she’ll be offering as a live performance option at the festival screening for any composer who needs it.

Once “Let’s Count To Six, Shall We?” has been released online, I’ll create a blog post with some video documentation and more info. Stay tuned!

Photos from rear of auditorium (except for the one of Josie) are by Charlie McCarron. Thanks again for having us, Charlie!
